Panthers GM Dave Gettleman opened a can of worms at the combine when he discussed long time wideout Steve Smith being a part of the evaluation process this offseason. The rumors Monday that Smith could be traded is an entire worm store.

NFL Network reports that the Panthers are trying to trade Smith, who will turn 35 in May.

And it's possible that these trade rumors ultimately signal the end of the long relationship with Smith and the Panthers.

Smith has a $7 million cap hit in 2013, and it only rises in the coming two years. He's not long for Carolina, although who knows how long he'll actually play. This isn't the first time trade rumors popped up surrounding Smith and just like in 2010 and 2011 it's really, really unlikely that Smith is getting dealt. There's way too much money left on his contract to make that happen.

So don't be shocked if Smith is released by Carolina.

Do be shocked if you can name anyone on the Panthers depth chart if it happens though. No, seriously. Can you name anyone?

If you said Marvin McNutt, Tavarres King, R.J. Webb, Kealoha Pilares, Brenton Bersin or Toney Clemons, well, congrats. Get yourself a cookie.

And while you're at it, give Cam Newton a hug.
