Good news, Buccaneers fans. The interest in Darrelle Revis is heating up and heating up quickly. The Patriots and Eagles were named as teams who would like Revis if he hits free agency. Add the Browns and the Raiders to the mix as well.
Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports the Raiders are "strong players" in the "Revis sweepstakes" and adds the Browns to the list as well.
But here's the likely difference: the Raiders and Browns will probably need to trade for Revis instead of simply signing him.
Both Oakland and Cleveland have tons of cap space, but is Revis really going to value money more than anything when it comes to his next contract? It's possible he could but winning has to factor in somewhere and there's no guarantee the Raiders and Browns are winning.
That being said, Cleveland is an interesting fit. Joe Haden's already a high-end corner, but he would be a ridiculously good No. 2 corner. He and Revis might even be an all-time tandem ...
If #Browns get Revis to team with Haden, is that best CB tandem in history? I'd say yes....— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) March 11, 2014
It's widely believed the Bucs will release Revis before 4 p.m. ET if they aren't able to trade him. So it's not like Tampa's out there looking for a first-round pick in return (they gave up a first round pick to the Jets, who drafted Sheldon Richardson ... ouch).
That means Oakland and Cleveland have a short window and a minimal price to make a play for the superstar cornerback. The next 24 hours should be extremely interesting.
