49ers trading for Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin

You've obviously heard, by now, the story of Jonathan Martin. Harassed by Richie Incognito, he bolted from the Dolphins and never returned. No one believed he could come back and now he won't.

Multiple reports (and first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN) indicate the 49ers have traded a conditional 7th-round draft pick to Miami in exchange for Martin. And Martin himself tweeted that he's headed out of Miami and to San Francisco.

San Francisco was one of the highly logical targets for the troubled offensive lineman. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh -- himself also in the news frequently this offseason -- coached Martin when he was the head coach at Stanford before leaving for the 49ers job.

The other logical location was the Colts, where Martin could be reunited with his former college quarterback Andrew Luck as well as college offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

But the 49ers make even more sense. They have Joe Staley and Anthony Davis at tackle, which means Martin won't be required to step in and start from day one. He's an upside-filled depth add for San Francisco at a fairly limited risk.

Worst case is Martin doesn't work out and the 49ers move on at no real cost. For Miami, there was little choice but to go in a different direction with Martin. Regardless of what you think about Martin's role in the whole harassment scandal, it would be difficult for him to return to the Dolphins locker room.

“We feel that this move is in the best interests of all parties involved,” Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey said. “We wish Jonathan well.”
