Derrick Fox, Smith's agent, made it clear to Steve Reed of the Associated Press that Smith's time in Carolina is done.
"[Smith] "is not going to play for the Panthers next year, I know that," Fox said. "I just don't know when that transaction is going to take place."
The Panthers were reportedly looking to trade Smith leading up to the beginning of free agency on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. That came after Dave Gettleman surprised Smith by pointing out that the wideout was part of the evaluation process.
Clearly it didn't sit well with Smith or his agent.
"Where we are disappointed is the fact he signed an extension to stay loyal to the club and complete his career as a Panther," Fox said. That is why we did the long-term team deal. Now we are at a crossroads where the Panthers don't want him anymore."
Sure looks like the inevitable end to this soap opera is ultimately going to be about as ugly as the Panthers wide receiver depth chart once Smith is off the roster.
