Aaron Rodgers likes Johnny Manziel because 'he didn't apologize'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

From now until May, Johnny Manziel will remain one of the most controversial figures in NFL circles. But he's gotten some impressive votes of confidence as of late including one from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who appears as a guest on Jim Rome on Showtime Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET.

Rodgers told Rome that he likes Manziel, specifically because he "didn't apologize" and, of course, because of how he plays.

"I like Johnny Football. I like that he didn't apologize for what happened. He was a 20-year-old kid who was enjoying life," Rodgers says. "He had some more opportunities financially with his family growing up, which allowed him in college, because of the bizarre extra benefit rules, to do some pretty cool things. And he didn't apologize. I think the way he plays on the field speaks for itself. He makes a lot of plays happen. We've seen in this league -- Russell [Wilson] winning the Super Bowl and [Colin] Kaepernick and Cam [Newton] and Andrew [Luck] being able to run around a little bit -- you have to be able to make plays if the pocket breaks down, unless you're a [Tom] Brady or a [Peyton] Manning.

Rodgers added that Manziel being "phsyically, mentally tough" and having "confidence" goes a long ways towards being a leader in the locker room and a successful quarterback.

"But I like Johnny, his confidence. As a quarterback it's one of the most important things you can have," Rodgers told Rome. "You need to be mentally tough, physically tough. I think he is both of those. He played with some injuries this year. Mentally he's been through a lot. He's got to be a tough guy.

"He has a lot of confidence and as a quarterback that can really translate and permeate your entire locker room when you're a leader."

Watch Jim Rome on Showtime Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
