We're now two weeks into free agency and the Panthers finally have added a veteran wide receiver to the roster. Jerricho Cotchery, 31, who spent the previous three seasons in Pittsburgh, inked a two-year deal Thursday, but he won't be able to work out with his new quarterback because Cam Newton just underwent ankle surgery and will be sidelined for four months.
We mention all this with the full understanding that what happens in early March has virtually no impact on the ensuing season; we're all too familiar with the Redskins winning the offseason Super Bowl only to tank when the games count.
With that in mind, on the latest Eye on Football Podcast, we talk about the Panthers and the rest of the NFC South, particularly the Buccaneers, who have been plenty busy since free agency began.
In other NFL news, we discuss Maurice Jones-Drew finding a new home, the new rules proposals to be considered by the competition committee at next week's owners' meetings, and what a poor Pro Day performance means (if anything) for Teddy Bridgewater's first-round draft prospects.
