After playing just five games for the Ravens last year, defensive end Marcus Spears -- the No. 20 overall pick by the Cowboys in the 2005 draft -- was waived by Baltimore in October. Turns out Spears, after nine seasons, is done playing for good.

The SEC Network announced Saturday that Spears, who helped LSU win a BCS title, has joined the network as a college football analyst, following in the footsteps of Tim Tebow.

“Marcus' personality and passion for the conference will be both entertaining and insightful for SEC fans," said Stephanie Druley, ESPN vice president, production of college networks. "His SEC roots make the new network the perfect place for him to start his television career."

Spears spent all but one season of his career with the Cowboys, where he recorded all 10 of his career sacks. But after a shortened 2013 season in Baltimore, Spears seems ready to start a new career in broadcasting.

“SEC football is in my blood; it is literally as much a part of my life as anything else. I've always appreciated the dedication of the fans and the talent of the players in the Southeastern Conference,” said Spears. “I plan on bringing a wealth of football knowledge and explaining it in a way for fans to understand the game better. I want it to feel like I am sitting in the living room with our fans debating and sharing knowledge. Football has been my life for most of my life and I am thankful for the opportunity ESPN has given me to keep me around the game.”
