Derek Carr says he's 'absolutely' best QB in draft; 'turn the film on'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Derek Carr is one of the top quarterbacks in a draft class without a clear-cut top guy. Coming out of Fresno State, he's got a lot going for him.

Including confidence. Carr said on NFL AM Tuesday morning that he's "absolutely" the best quarterback in this class.

"Absolutely. And I say that with respect to all the other guys because they're great competitors and all those good things," Carr said. "And it's not easy for me to answer a question like that but I absolutely think so."

He'll even go so far as to prove it to you if you're willing to sit down and watch some film.

"There's no doubt in my mind," Carr said. "We can turn the film on, sit down and watch it and we'll talk about it and I'll convince you."

Now the question is can he convince NFL general managers and coaches? There are a slew of teams that could be interested in Carr. The Texans have the top pick in the first and second round. The Jaguars have a need at quarterback. The Browns and Raiders do too and the Vikings are a potentially interesting fit at eight.

Carr believes -- based on what he's been told by GMs and coaches as well -- that he'll eventually end up being taken in the first round and could go ahead of several of the other quarterbacks in this class.

"No doubt. I sure hope so. My wife sure hopes so. My son sure hopes so. But I do [believe so]," Carr says. From what I've heard from the GMs, from what I've heard from the coaches, and what they're telling me … I do. Whichever way it works out, it works out. From what they've been saying it'll work out that way."

The quarterbacks are what make this draft class fun. There's not a dearth like 2013, when Geno Smith, Ryan Nassib, Matt Barkley and EJ Manuel all underwhelmed as options. But it's not like 2012 when there were a few locks available like Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

It's much closer to in between. There's no sure fire way to know if Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles, Carr or any of the other quarterbacks are locks to succeed.

That's why May 8 will be so fascinating and why you can't rule out Carr hearing his name called.
