It's silly season right now, a time when the NFL world is covered in smoke. Anything you hear is a lie, whether you're a media member, fan or even a player. So take what A.J. McCarron was told by teams with a grain of salt.
"They felt like I could go anywhere from 16-35," McCarron said. "I believe that, too. At the same time, I don't have my hopes set on anything. Whatever happens, happens. It's a blessing for me to even be in this situation."
McCarron's quote is particularly hilarious because he said he believes it ... and then promptly went on to say that teams lie all the time and you can't believe what you hear.
"It's not like the GMs are calling these guys and telling them, 'Hey, we're going to draft this guy at this number so go ahead and put that out there,'" McCarron said. "One thing I've learned about this whole process, it's nothing but a big secret.
"A lot of times teams will bring in a guy just to bluff another team and make it seem like toward the media that they like this guy and really they have no interest at all in drafting him."
The former Alabama quarterback was, clearly, talking about teams and the media. Quite the difference between teams and players, but it's not like some NFL team is going to tell McCarron they'll take him (he's no better about holding a secret than we are).
Could McCarron actually go in that range? It's possible. But it's not a great wheelhouse for him either.
Once you get to 16, there's a big chunk of teams who don't need a quarterback. Really only the Browns at 26 make sense.
Perhaps someone trading back into the first round could grab McCarron, but wouldn't it make more sense to wait until the second round for him? (Hint: it would.) Only the Texans and Browns (again) are a logical landing spot if we're taking him literally.
Cleveland could love McCarron. If they do, they can certainly have him. And there might be a team out there who believes McCarron's worth a first- or second-round pick. The nature of quarterback economics could push him up the board.
But it would be a massive upset if McCarron gets drafted where he think he will.
