NEW YORK -- In many NFL draft analyst quarters, former Texas A&M offensive tackle Jake Matthews was regarded as one of the safest picks in this year's draft class. The Falcons thought so, at least, as Atlanta selected Matthews with the No. 6 overall pick in Thursday's first round.

Matthews' selection came before his former teammate, Johnny Manziel, was taken in this year's draft.

Here's what CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco thought of the selection.

With the pick, the Falcons now can look to move Matthews to the left tackle spot in an attempt to protecct franchise quarterback Matt Ryan.

It's also the second straight season a Texas A&M left tackle has been taken in the first six picks of the draft, with Matthews, the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, following Luke Joeckel to the Jaguars with the No. 2 overall selection in 2013.

As for what he'll be paid ...
