NEW YORK -- With the No. 26 overall pick, the Eagles have selected Louisville defensive Marcus Smith in the first round of the NFL draft.

Smith actually went to Louisville as a quarterback, but after only a few days, the coaching staff decided he'd be better suited as a defensive player. Nice call, Cardinals coaches. In 2013, Smith recorded 14.5 sacks, the second-best total in the nation.

CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco likes the selection, giving it a B.

As NFLDraftScout.com's Rob Rang wrote, "Smith served as a moveable chess piece on the Cardinals' defense throughout his career, logging time at every position along the defensive line as well as a stand-up outside linebacker. Optimists will view him as a hybrid defender capable of finding a niche in any scheme. Others will see Smith as a 'tweener prospect who struggles to handle double-teams at the line and lacks the elite athleticism to develop into an impact playmaker in the NFL."
