2014 NFL Draft, Day 2: 10 things to know, Jimmy Garoppolo edition

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

Draft coverage: Draft picks and grades | Prospect Rankings | Mock drafts | News

The first two days of the 2014 NFL Draft are in the books, and while rounds two and three weren't quite Round 1 spectacle, there was still plenty to talk about. So let's get to it...

1. Since 2005, the Patriots have drafted five quarterbacks: Matt Cassel (7th round, 2005), Kevin O'Connell (3rd round, 2008), Zac Robinson (7th round, 2010), Ryan Mallett (3rd round, 2011) and now Jimmy Garoppolo (2nd round, 2014).

Of that group, only Cassel got significant playing time with the Pats and that was only because Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 of the '08 season. With Garoppolo now headed to New England, the feeling is that he's next in line behind Brady.

Yes, the futuer Hall of Famer will be 37 when the season begins, but there's no guarantee Garoppolo will be any better than his predecessors. Still, that doesn't mean we can't talk about it!

Not everybody was crazy about the move, however:

Oh, and there's this:

2. Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer was one of 30 players at Radio City Music Hall, and when he finally heard his name called Friday (56th pick to the Broncos), he rolled out of the green room and onto the stage looking like this:

Fred G. Sanford approves. And the "G" stands for Good lord, man.

3. The Giants took center Weston Richburg with their second-round pick. Richburg definitely fills a need, and he also loves pigs.

4. Through two days, the Jags have had a solid draft. And sometimes, luck plays a big part in things falling into place. In Round 1, the team landed Blake Bortles, then on Friday they gave their new franchise quarterback two shiny weapons when they landed wideouts Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson.

Two years ago, the Jags used a first-round pick on Justin Blackmon. Now suspended, the team appears ready to move on from him.

Hey, Josh Gordon, you paying attention?

5. In 2005, three running backs went in the first five picks. This year, the first running back didn't go off the board until the 54th pick, when the Titans selected Washington's Bishop Sankey. The previous record for running backs going undrafted? Last year, when Gio Bernard lasted until pick No. 37.

6. The Colts would never admit it publicly, but we're guessing they'd love to get their hands on a time machine and un-trade for Trent Richardson.

Back in October, we wrote about Richardson's struggles and ended with this: "Obviously, losing Vick Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw necessitated some roster moves. It just shouldn't have been for a Colts' first-rounder. A pick, by the way, the team really could have used next April on a run-blocking interior lineman."

The Colts' first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft (59th overall): Ohio St. offensive tackle Jack Mewhort.

7. Pre-draft rumors that the Patriots could trade backup Ryan Mallett to the Texans apparently are just that. In fact, the Texans had some interest in Jimmy Garoppolo.

Mallet's in the last year of his rookie deal, and a year from now he'll almost certainly be somewhere other than New England.

8. If you're holding out hope that Zach Mettenberger, Tom Savage, Tajh Boyd, or Logan Thomas might blossom into special players, you might want to readjust your expectations.

9. Kony Ealy has strong, bejeweled wrists.

10. Poor Browns fans. Less than 24 hours after a homeless dude convinced owner Jimmy Haslam to draft Johnny Manziel, all-everything wideout Josh Gordon is reportedly facing an indefinite suspension for violating the league's substance abuse program. Exacerbating matters: Cleveland didn't take a wideout with their 35th pick, much to the chagrin of this poor sap.

In other Johnny Football-related news, this is the most Jerry Jones comment ever:
