President Obama congratulates Michael Sam, Rams, NFL

On Saturday night, the NFL experienced a historical moment when the Rams selected Missouri linebacker Michael Sam with the 249th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. Sam became the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Millions witnessed an emotional moment as Sam wept on national television and everyone (rightfully so) flocked to congratulate Sam. President Barack Obama joined the parade on Sunday.

"The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward in our Nation's journey,” the White House said in a statement. "From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are."

Sam fell further in the draft than some -- especially the linebacker himself -- thought he would and ultimately ended up going in the seventh round to the Rams.

But St. Louis is a good fit if Sam can manage to make the roster. There won't be pressure to come in and be a starter (Robert Quinn and Chris Long are quite good) but he can help as a situational pass rusher, which is really where he's best suited.

And it's not like the Rams are far from home: the University of Missouri is less than a two-hour drive from the Edward Jones Dome where the Rams play.
