A week before trading up in the first round to take quarterback Johnny Manziel, the Browns signed 2006 first-rounder Vince Young. On Monday, the team released Young.

The Browns also parted ways with backup quarterback Alex Tanney, leaving Brian Hoyer, Manziel, Tyler Thigpen and undrafted free agent Connor Shaw to compete for snaps.

Hoyer said Friday that he welcomes competition from Manziel.

"Everybody in America knew we were going to draft a quarterback," Hoyer said. "I've said a million times, I have all the confidence in the world in myself. So we'll just see how it plays out."

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported earlier this month: "Thigpen had a strong minicamp on a tryout basis and his athleticism is a fit in coordinator Kyle Shanahan's system. Team sources said he out-performed Young."

We'll have to wait to see if Young will get another chance to make an NFL roster, but if this is truly the end of the line for his NFL career, he has a job waiting for him at the University of Texas.
