Colts nearly had Hafthor Bjornsson, Mountain from 'Game of Thrones'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Hafthor Bjornsson, The Mountain from 'Game of Thrones,' once nearly signed with the Colts.
Icelandic strongman Hafthor Bjornsson is 6-9, 420 lbs and 25 years old. (

Gregor Clegane, a.k.a. The Mountain on "Game of Thrones," once shoved his brother's face into the fire for playing with his toys. He slices through men and smashes the bodies of everyone in front of him. Needless to say, he's nasty enough to play football.

And he almost did: back in 2013 the Colts almost signed Hafthor Bjornsson, the latest man to play The Mountain on HBO's hit series.

Last year, Colts owner Jim Irsay sent out a tweet -- in typical Irsay language -- about possibly signing Bjornsson.

The role of the elder Clegane's previously been played by Conan Stevans (Season 1) and Ian Whyte (Season 2).

Bjornsson made his debut in Season 4's latest episode "Mockingbird," briefly appearing at the end.

He'll be MUCH more prominent in the post Memorial Day episode, "The Mountain and the Viper." No spoilers coming from me (and please don't leave them in the comments either, especially if you've read the books), but let's just say that if Bjornsson doesn't show up for his next, ahem, game then he's going to get a major red flag for character concerns.

And if you're not a GoT fan but want to see this very very large individual in action, you can catch Bjornsson on World's Strongest Man airing on CBS Sports Network, June 4.
