NFL owners table playoff expansion discussion during Atlanta meetings

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The NFL playoffs won't expand in 2014. No vote was taken by the NFL owners at their meetings in Atlanta this week on playoff expansion, as the proposal to expand the playoffs was tabled.

According to multiple reports (including one from Stephen Jones of the Cowboys), the owners decided not to vote on Tuesday and will revisit the idea in the fall.

A source tells Bob Glauber of Newsday a vote today is "dead."

This shouldn't come as a massive shock.

Roger Goodell previously left open the possibility of expanding the playoffs for 2014 while discussing the matter at the owners meetings in Orlando earlier this offseason.

However such a move would be a pretty big culture shock to the league and wouldn't leave a ton of time for preparation.

Making the change in the fall for the 2015 league year would make substantially more sense. The owners will likely vote on such an initiative then.
