The Saints are bringing center Jonathan Goodwin back to New Orleans. The two sides have agreed in principle on a one-year deal that Goodwin is expected to sign this week, according to ESPN.com.

The 35-year-old spent the past three seasons in San Francisco where he started all 48 regular games for a 49ers team that made it to Super Bowl XLVII and appeared in the NFC title game three straight times.

Goodwin was a free agent after the 2014 season and the 49ers chose not to re-sign him. The 2002 fifth-round pick of the Jets will now return to New Orleans where he spent five seasons (2006-10). Goodwin started 47 games during his five years with the Saints, including 2009, when he made it to the Pro Bowl. That was the same year New Orleans won Super Bowl XLIV.

Before signing with New Orleans in 2006, Goodwin spent four seasons with the Jets.

Goodwin will compete with Tim Lelito for the Saints starting center job that was left vacant after three-year starter Brian de la Puente signed with the Bears in April.
