Texans first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney had sports hernia surgery Thursday, coach Bill O'Brien revealed to reporters Friday. The defensive end from South Carolina was dealing with a groin issue but is expected to be healthy when the Texans begin training camp in late July.

“It was the best thing for J.D. and the best thing for our team and the best thing for our organization,” O'Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “He'll be ready to go for training camp. That's about all I'll say about that.”

A week ago, the Texans signed Clowney to a four-year contract with a club option for a fifth year. According to the collective bargaining agreement, the deal is worth approximately $22.3 million.
