This is potentially awkward: Cowboys backup quarterback Kyle Orton, whom coach Jason Garrett said he expects to report for mandatory minicamp, did not show for Monday's physical, according to ESPN.com.

If this sounds familiar, it should. Back in April, Orton wasn't around for the team's voluntary workouts because the 32-year-old has been weighing retirement. One problem: The Cowboys signed Orton in March 2012 to be Tony Romo's backup. If Orton calls it a career, he would have to repay the Cowboys $3 million of his $5 million signing bonus, and he would forgo an addition $3.25 million in salary in 2014. Should the Cowboys decide to cut Orton, he would owe nothing.

By missing Monday's physical, Orton could be fined $10,930 by the team. That increases to $11,575 for each day of the mandatory minicamp Orton isn't present. If he misses all three days, he would incur the maximum fine: $69,455.

Meanwhile, Romo continues to recover from back surgery (he says he'll be 100 percent by the end of the month), which means that the Cowboys' able-bodied-and-on-the-premises depth chart currently looks like this: Brandon Weeden, Caleb Hanie and undrafted rookie Dustin Vaughn.
