More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

In 2011, defensive end Jason Babin was a monster for the Eagles, accumulating 18 sacks and earning the second Pro Bowl berth of his career.

But he's spent the last 21 games in Jacksonville after the Eagles released him midway through the 2012 season, and while he's started every contest for the Jaguars since, he's not been nearly as productive, gathering nine sacks in a Jaguars uniform. And though they already paid him a $500,000 roster bonus earlier this offseason, the Jaguars quietly released him Thursday morning, according to numerous reports.

Babin opted out of his contract this offseason but then re-signed with the squad for a three-year, $7.28 million deal.

But even though he led the team with 7.5 sacks last season, the Jaguars seem confident they won't need a 34-year-old Babin to take up playing time that could be reserved for a player like Andre Branch, a 2012 second-round pick coming off a six-sack season, and Red Bryant -- who signed a four-year deal this offseason. The team also signed former Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons after the 2013 season.

As for Babin's future ...
