The son of Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has been accused of fleeing the scene of a car accident and has been charged with failing to stop and render aid, a third-degree felony, according to the Miami Herald.

The incident occurred last March in Austin, Texas, when, according to a police report, the 26-year-old Matthew Philbin crashed his Jeep into a Honda Civic while he was driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

The driver of the Civic allegedly suffered injuries to her arm, head and neck.

A witness who saw the accident asked for Philbin's cell phone to call for help, but police say he refused and said he didn't want the police involved. Then, he allegedly hailed a cab and left the scene. When police arrived, they found Philbin's phone, wallet and military ID card (Philbin is a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army).

More from the Herald:

According to the report, Philbin had text messages from a friend concerned that he was driving while intoxicated. Both [the driver of the Civic, Kristen] Robinson and the witness identified Philbin in a lineup.

Based on the evidence found at the scene, Drake said the case seemed pretty routine. But then Philbin's attorney reached out to police and asked them to postpone the investigation.

“He asks me to hold off on the investigation because [Philbin] was about to be promoted to captain in the military,” he said. When the victim's father found out, he called officials at Fort Hood and informed them of the charges.

The Dolphins declined to comment.

The court date for Matthew Philbin has been set for July 7.
