There will come a time, probably in the not-too-distant future, when owner Daniel Snyder will be forced to rename the Washington Redskins. Yes, 13 months ago he vowed that "We'll never change the name, it's that simple. NEVER -- you can use caps." But ultimately, the decision may not be his to make.

Last week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration because it considers the team's name “disparaging to Native Americans." And if that ruling is upheld by a judge (15 years ago, the very same decision was overturned), the NFL could pressure Snyder to come up with something to replace "Redskins."

Then the question becomes what the Washington professional football club would call itself. The choices span the spectrum.

The latest, courtesy of the Washington Times' Michael Taube (via Sports Bog): The Washington ... Reagans.

Taube writes: "This idea isn't being seriously considered, of course. But if people keep getting their knickers in a knot about the Redskins' trademarks every 10 or 15 years, why not change the team's name to the Reagans?

"For one thing, it would be the ultimate tribute to Ronald Reagan. Many Americans, and the vast majority of conservatives, would applaud this decision. He was a great man, a great patriot and a great president. If there was ever a world leader who deserved to have his name associated in a positive fashion with a sports team, it would be Reagan…."
