Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker was the lucky beneficiary of a machine mistake during the Kentucky Derby which netted him an extra $15,000 in winnings during the race.

Churchill Downs wanted to get the cash back from the wideout but Welker said following the race he didn't intend to pay the racetrack back.

And he confirmed during an interview with 98.5's "Toucher and Rich" he didn't pay the Derby folks back.

"They called me afterwards," Welker said. "I don't know. I never returned that phone call."

You can finger wag all you want about Welker giving money back to the Derby for the mistake. He got handed a free pile of cash.

But I thought Welker made a strong point when initially discussing the incident: if he'd LOST $15,000 to Churchill Downs because of a machine error, would they be scrambling to put that money in his pocket?

The answer might be yes (it happens in Monopoly after all) but the answer could also be no. (Crazy how that works.) Regardless the file is basically closed, Welker's $15,000 richer and there's not much anyone can do about it.
