More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

It's official: Bills second-year linebacker Kiko Alonso suffered a torn ACL while training in Oregon earlier this week and his 2014 season is now in doubt. The team released a statement confirming as much Wednesday.

"We have updated information regarding Kiko Alonso from yesterday," general manager Doug Whaley said. "Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will most likely miss the 2014 season. He will be scheduled for surgery in the near future and begin a rehabilitation program at the appropriate time.

"We feel badly for Kiko because he has worked very hard this offseason in preparation for the upcoming season, but we look forward to his return with his style of play that made him one of the league's outstanding rookies in 2013."

Obviously, that's bad news, especially given that Alonso ranked as the ninth-best inside linebacker in the league last season, according to ProFootballFocus.com, just behind Sean Lee (whose 2014 season also ended before it began) and Luke Kuechly.

Now for the good news (relatively speaking, anyway): The Bills have some depth at the position, including Nigel Bradham, Keith Rivers and rookie third-round pick Preston Brown.

Shortly after the May NFL Draft, Jim Monos, the Bills director of player personnel, said of the team's first three draft picks -- wide receiver Sammy Watkins, offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio and Brown: "You know, you look at your haul with those three picks ... coming out of that you felt really excited. Our philosophy: Your first three rounds are starters or considerable contributors and we feel like we got those."

And Brown may be thrust into that role much sooner than expected.
