The Chargers released former first-round pick Larry English, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

The outside linebacker was taken with the 16th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by then GM A.J. Smith. Current GM Tom Telesco thanked English for his time in a statement from the team.

"We'd like to thank Larry for his five years of dedicated service to the Chargers," Telesco said. "Larry always gave us everything he had on the field while making significant contributions to many deserving organizations in the San Diego community."

English was one of the many draft busts near the end of Smith's run: despite his high draft status, he totaled just 11 sacks in nine games over five years with San Diego.

The former first-round pick suffered a torn biceps injury against the Broncos in Week 10 that put him out for the 2013 season.

With Dwight Freeney, Jarret Johnson, Melvin Ingram and Jeremiah Attaochu on board, the Chargers have a pile of bodies at outside linebacker already.
