By almost any measure, the Raiders were not very good in Friday's preseason game against the Vikings. It took 22 minutes for the offense to cross midfield and quarterback Matt Schaub's debut did little to assuage concerns that he's the answer, short term or otherwise.

He finished the night 3 of 7 for 21 yards, and was victimized by at least one dropped pass. Afterwards, Schaub confirmed what everyone saw with their own eyes.

“Overall, we were pretty sloppy,” he said, via CSNCaliforna.com's Scott Bair. “We hurt ourselves with a lot of penalties and we put ourselves in long yardage situations. It's tough to win that way. We have to really look hard at the mistakes and clean those up because they are things we can control, especially pre-snap issues. We need to iron those (mistakes) out if we want to be the type of team we want to be.”

Meanwhile, rookie second-round pick Derek Carr looks slightly better, going 10 of 16 for 74 yards and an interception. He seemed comfortable on short throws, something he did frequently and with great skill in college, but struggled when looking downfield.

Coach Dennis Allen, who is perpetually on the hot seat, said he was "disappointed in the way we played," adding "I thought we'd come out sharper and execute better than that.”

And according to Bair, owner Mark Davis appeared to be "visibly upset with what he watched" from his suite at TCF Bank Stadium, though Davis didn't speak to the media after the game so it's unclear exactly what had him riled up (hey, maybe it was the spinach dip).

Whatever it was, this much is certain: Davis is not a patient man and if the 2014 Raiders resemble the 2013 version, it's reasonable to think that Allen will be looking for work before Thanksgiving. Put another way: Allen's long-term employment prospects rests heavily with his decision to go all-in on Schaub.
