Tanya Singleton, a relative of Aaron Hernandez, was imprisoned last August for refusing to testify to a grand jury about the shooting of Odin Lloyd.

On Tuesday, she pleaded guilty to her criminal contempt charge, but because of her advanced breast cancer, Fall River Superior Court judge E. Susan Garsh declined to give her jail time. Instead, Singleton was sentenced to two years of probation, according to the Associated Press.

Singleton, 38, had been given immunity in exchange for her testimony against Hernandez, but prosecutors said she had received financial assistance from Hernandez and was especially loyal to him. In fact, prosecutor William McCauley said she put the needs of Hernandez ahead of her two children as she prepared to go to jail while remaining silent.

McCauley also said Singleton had a "perverted ... sense of loyalty."

Said the judge: "Ms. Singleton's willful conduct was an assault on the rule of law."

Singleton was married to Hernandez's late uncle, and authorities had said she bought a bus ticket to Florida for Ernest Wallace, who has since pleaded not guilty to accessory to murder. Hernandez's other alleged accomplice in the Lloyd case, Carlos Ortiz, also talked with Singleton about Lloyd's slaying, according to authorities.

Hernandez, meanwhile, has been charged with three murders and waits in prison for his trials.
