The first game at the 49ers new stadium turned into tragedy for one fan. During the third quarter of Sunday's game between San Franciso and Denver, a man collapsed and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the Santa Clara Fire Department said.

The unidentified man suffered a cardiac emergency and was given CPR before being taken by ambulance to a hospital in San Jose.

"The 49ers organization is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our fans earlier today," the team said in a statement. "We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and friends in this time of sadness."

According to the San Jose Mercury News, there was an 'unusually high number of calls for emergency services' at Levi's Stadium. It was the first game played at the 49ers new stadium 45 miles south of San Francisco.

Heat may have had played a factor in some of the emergency calls: The 49ers new stadium is located in Santa Clara where it was 80 degrees at kickoff. The high temperature at Candlestick Park -- the team's old stadium -- was 66 degrees on Sunday.

To escape the heat, many fans sitting in the sun either left the game early or headed for the shade during the second half of the 49ers 34-0 loss to Denver.
