Browns coach Mike Pettine probably should have never mentioned that he wanted to have a starter in place by the third preseason game. Because after what happened at FedEx Field Monday night, Rex Grossman might prove to be Cleveland's best option heading into the season.

That's a slight exaggeration but not by much. Either way, after uninspiring efforts from veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Johnny Manziel, Pettine doesn't appear any close to making a decision.

“I don't know,'' Pettine told's Peter King, channeling Mr. Hand. “Neither guy really distinguished himself tonight, and we'll have to go back and study the tape and figure out who to go with. I will lean on [offensive coordinator] Kyle Shanahan and [quarterback coach] Dowell Loggains quite a bit, because they've watched them every day.''

Last week, there was a report that the Browns didn't want Manziel to face the Steelers in Week 1, and Manziel admitted as much a few days later. On Tuesday, hours after Manziel's middle finger became the NFL's biggest story, Boomer Esiason agreed, saying on his radio show that Manziel would get his "ass kicked" in Pittsburgh.

Whomever ends up under center, the Browns are in for another long season. We have them winning between 4-6 games, which isn't much different than any other year.

Oh, and expect a lot of this:
