Cardinals cut kicker Jay Feely

As NFL teams have begun the arduous process of cutting down their rosters to 75, there aren't a ton of well-known names among those players who are losing their jobs. Mostly, those newsworthy cuts will be saved for when teams have to cut down to 53 on Saturday.

But on Monday afternoon, the Cardinals made a relatively big move.

Jay Feely is a 13-year veteran, and he's spent the past four seasons in Arizona, where he made 85.2 percent of his field goals from 2010-13. But after hitting 25 of 28 field goals (89.3 percent) in 2012 -- his most-accurate season since 2007 -- Feely slid a little last year, connecting on just 83.3 percent.

Feely had competition in training camp from Chandler Catanzaro, an undrafted free agent who left Clemson as the school's all-time leading scorer, and Catanzaro has received positive reviews throughout camp.

Meanwhile, Feely badly missed a 48-yard field goal vs. the Bengals on Sunday night, and that -- along with Catanzaro's fresher leg -- might have sealed Feely's fate.

“I think you always have competition, whether you have somebody here or not,” Feely said in the days leading up to the Bengals contest. “You're always looking around the whole NFL. You're not just competing against [another kicker] in the locker room, and I'm not just competing for this job. It's just the reality of kicking in the NFL. I've been around long enough to understand that. You have to get better every day. You have to show that you can continue to do the job.”
