Although Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has a hairline fracture in his ribs and the word was that he might not play in the team's season opener, Newton put that idea to rest on Wednesday.

Because he's playing. For real.

"There's no doubt in my mind," Newton told reporters Wednesday, via ESPN.com.

Newton injured his ribs last week vs. the Patriots, and though coach Ron Rivera said he thought Newton would be ready to play by Week 1, he also claimed his quarterback's injury status was week to week. Not so, Newton said.

"No setback at all," Newton said. "... My body feels better. It's obvious my ribs [were] hurting. I'm moving forward trying to stay positive and optimistic about this whole process. It's given me even greater focus on trying to heal my ankle at the same time."

As he mentions, though, Newton might not be 100 percent since he's still recovering from the ankle surgery he underwent in the offseason.

Thus, he won't play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, but Rivera said Newton would return to full practice status next Monday.
