Report: Redskins rookie Lache Seastrunk texts he's been released

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

In May, the Redskins used a sixth-round pick on Lache Seastrunk, the speedy running back out of Baylor. Saturday morning, Seastrunk told ESPN.com's John Keim in a text that he has been released.

It's not uncommon for rookie sixth-rounders to fall short of the 53-man roster but Seastrunk's release is interesting because he gave the Redskins' offense something it was lacking last season: game-breaking speed out of the backfield. We saw that in Thursday's preseason finale against the Buccaneers when he he caught a screen pass and blurred his way to the end zone.

But that play came in the third quarter, against Tampa Bay's backups to the backups, apparently an indication that Seastrunk's fate had already been sealed after an uneven preseason. But speed, as the old coaching bromide goes, can't be coached. Which means Seastrunk, who averaged 7.4 yards per carry during his senior season at Baylor, will draw interest from other NFL teams.

The Redskins have also reportedly released running backs Chris Thompson, a 2013 fifth-rounder, and Evan Royster, a 2011 sixth-rounder.
