Like nearly a third of his Colts teammates, wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was fighting for a place on the 53-man roster during the team's final preseason game Thursday. His 7-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter of an otherwise meaningless affair against the Bengals certainly helped his cause.

What happened next, however, did not: Rogers' celebration included punting the ball into the stands.

That's unsportsmanlike conduct, a 15-yard penalty.

"I wasn't thinking," Rogers said after the game, via ESPN.com. "That's on me. That's just my misunderstanding of the rules of the game and that's all on me. It was just a mistake."

More worrisome for Rogers: coach Chuck Pagano's reaction.

"It's unacceptable," Pagano said. "It does not represent anything we're about. I apologize to our fans."

Rogers was originally signed to the Colts' practice squad in September 2013 before he was promoted to the 53-man roster several weeks later. He played in five games as a rookie and caught 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. He's again on the roster bubble and if the Colts keep five wide receivers, he could be on the outside looking in.

"At an all-time high," Rogers said of his anxiety about making the team. "With the room that we have and the talent that we have in our room, every day is a competition. You got to come out and work."
