| New Orleans Saints 34, Green Bay Packers 42 | ||
| 33 | Super Bowl champs are 10-0 in the last ten season openers. This should be no different. I give the edge in this game to the Packers in part because of their defense. The Saints have had issues on defense in the preseason and they will be without Will Smith, their best pass rusher. That's trouble against Aaron Rodgers. He lights them up. Drew Brees will do his part, but it won't be enough. Get ready for a shootout. Result: Green Bay Packers 42, New Orleans Saints 34 | |

| Pittsburgh Steelers 7, Baltimore Ravens 35 | ||
| 24 | The Steelers knocked the Ravens out of the playoffs last year by holding them to 126 yards of offense. They played that game at home because they rallied to beat Baltimore in the second game between the two during the regular season. The Ravens had trouble rushing the passer last season, and that will show up again here. I think Ben Roethlisberger picks on the Baltimore corners. Result: Pittsburgh Steelers 7, Baltimore Ravens 35 | |
| 20 | ||
| Atlanta Falcons 12, Chicago Bears 30 | ||
| 23 | The Falcons were the top seed in the NFC playoffs last year -- and they're better. The Bears won the NFC North, and they're not. But it's tough to open on the road against a non-division opponent. The Bears are a home underdog here, and that speaks volumes about the Falcons. I like Matt Ryan to have a big day. Falcons take it. Result: Atlanta Falcons 12, Chicago Bears 30 | |
| 17 | ||
| Cincinnati Bengals 27, Cleveland Browns 17 | ||
| 23 | The Browns appear to be a team on the way up. The Bengals look to be a team going the other way. Colt McCoy has the edge over rookie Andy Dalton, who starts at quarterback for the Bengals. Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron will have a good plan to throw at the rookie. The Bengals have been the better team in this series lately, but not this time. Result: Cleveland Browns 17, Cincinnati Bengals 27 | |
| 13 | ||
| Indianapolis Colts 7, Houston Texans 34 | ||
| 31 | The Texans have been talking about this game since the schedule came out. Now they will face a Peyton Manning-less Colts team. What a break. Kerry Collins is capable of pulling off a win or two, but not here. The Texans will be amped to unveil their new-look defense on Collins. Manning might make them pay. Collins won't. The Texans offense also shines. Result: Houston Texans 34, Indianapolis Colts 7 | |
| 17 | ||
| Tennessee Titans 14, Jacksonville Jaguars 16 | ||
| 21 | The Jaguars released starting quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday, which means Luke McCown will start. He isn't much better, but he does do a better job handling the offense. The Titans will start Matt Hasselbeck. I think his best football is long in the rear-view mirror. So this comes down to Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Chris Johnson. That means a tight game. Result: Jacksonville Jaguars 16, Tennessee Titans 14 | |
| 20 | ||
| Buffalo Bills 41, Kansas City Chiefs 7 | ||
| 20 | The Chiefs were horrible in the preseason, but does that matter? The key will be how well Matt Cassel can play with bad ribs. Can he make plays down the field? Look for the Chiefs, who were the top rushing team in 2010, to pound it at a Bills team that has questions about its ability to stop the run. I think Ryan Fitzpatrick will be able to make some plays in the passing game for the Bills. They keep it close. Result: Kansas City Chiefs 7, Buffalo Bills 41 | |
| 17 | ||
| Philadelphia Eagles 31, St. Louis Rams 13 | ||
| 28 | The Rams are better, but the Eagles have added a lot of big-time players to their roster. The Philadelphia corners should be able to take away the St. Louis receivers, which will make it tough on Sam Bradford. Mike Vick had trouble with the blitz late last season, so look for the Rams to come after him. I think Vick learned from it and makes them pay. The Dream Team is off to a good start, getting a tough road victory. Result: Philadelphia Eagles 31, St. Louis Rams 13 | |
| 20 | ||
| Detroit Lions 27, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20 | ||
| 27 | This game matches two up-and-coming teams. The Bucs won 10 games last season, and they are better. The Lions are definitely better than the 2010 team. The key here will how well the Detroit pass rush does against Josh Freeman. If he has time, he lights up the Detroit secondary. I think he does. Matt Stafford won't keep up. Result: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Detroit Lions 27 | |
| 21 | ||
| Carolina Panthers 21, Arizona Cardinals 28 | ||
| 30 | This is the debut for Cam Newton as quarterback of the Panthers. It's a long trip for them, which will make it even tougher. The Cardinals traded to get Kevin Kolb to play quarterback and he and Larry Fitzgerald should have big days against a Carolina secondary that has issues. Look for the Cardinals to do a good job confusing Newton, while Kolb puts up some nice stats. Result: Arizona Cardinals 28, Carolina Panthers 21 | |
| 17 | ||
| Minnesota Vikings 17, San Diego Chargers 24 | ||
| 30 | The Chargers have to show they can get off to a fast start this season -- something they rarely do under Norv Turner -- and getting this Vikings team at home is a good way to do it. The Vikings have issues on their offensive line, which you don't want against the San Diego defense. Without Sidney Rice, Donovan McNabb will have problems making plays against a good San Diego secondary. The Chargers don't start slowly today. Result: San Diego Chargers 24, Minnesota Vikings 17 | |
| 14 | ||
| Seattle Seahawks 17, San Francisco 49ers 33 | ||
| 21 | Hard to believe the Seahawks won the NFC West last season -- and they hardly look like the same team now. Tarvaris Jackson is the quarterback now, and he had a rough go of it in the preseason. The offensive line has issues. The 49ers aren't much better on offense, but Alex Smith will be able to make plays against the Seattle secondary. Look for the 49ers to get off to a good start for new coach Jim Harbaugh. Result: San Francisco 49ers 33, Seattle Seahawks 17 | |
| 14 | ||
| NY Giants 14, Washington Redskins 28 | ||
| 24 | The Giants have won the last six in this series. But this is an improved Redskins team. So the difference will be quarterback. I'll take Eli Manning over Rex Grossman any day. And I do so here. Manning will hit Hakeem Nicks for two big scoring plays to be the difference in this game. Result: NY Giants 14, Washington Redskins 28 | |
| 17 | ||
| Dallas Cowboys 24, NY Jets 27 | ||
| 23 | This will be an emotional scene on the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy. And it's a road night game for the Cowboys, which will make for tough going. But I think the Cowboys will be much improved on defense. Rob Ryan will show up here with some good schemes to slow down the Jets running game. Tony Romo plays well outside the division. He does so here. Rob Ryan beats Rex Ryan. Result: Dallas Cowboys 24, NY Jets 27 | |

| New England Patriots 38, Miami Dolphins 24 | ||
| 27 | The Patriots blew out the Dolphins twice last season. That won't happen here. Miami's defense is better. Tom Brady kills teams with the short passing game, so it's tough to get pressure on him. That means cover corners are key. The Dolphins have them. Chad Henne will try to exploit a New England defense that is so-so on the back end and doesn't have great pass rushers. The new-look Dolphins offense will do that. Brandon Marshall has a big night. Upset special. Result: Miami Dolphins 24, New England Patriots 38 | |
| 24 | ||
| Oakland Raiders 23, Denver Broncos 20 | ||
| 30 | The Raiders swept the AFC West last year, and they are better. The Broncos are not. The Raiders will try to run the ball at a Denver defense that isn't strong up the middle. Denver had problems running it last year. If that happens again, it will be a tough night for Kyle Orton. Keep an eye out for the Raiders young pass rushers in this one. The Raiders have won three consecutive road games against the Broncos. They make it four. Result: Oakland Raiders 23, Denver Broncos 20 | |
