TIME: 01:00 P.M. EST VENUE: Dolphin Stadium Not much has gone right for the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins this season. These disappointing teams both look to earn just their second victories of the season Sunday when they meet in Miami for the first time in nearly six years. Green Bay (1-4) enters this contest just percentage points ahead of Detroit for last place in the NFC North, while Miami (1-5) is last in the AFC East and tied with four other clubs for the most losses in the NFL. The Dolphins had high expectations entering this season after winning their final six games last year and acquiring veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper, but the offense has struggled more than expected while the defense has been inconsistent. "All I can say is that we need to continue to work to try to get some of the things that are not going well corrected so that we have a better chance and a better probability of success," coach Nick Saban said. "All I can tell you is we are either going to get it done or we're going to die trying. One or the other." Culpepper has sat out the last two games to focus on rehabilitating his surgically repaired right knee, but Joey Harrington hasn't been able to lead the club out of its slump. Harrington has thrown four interceptions and just one touchdown in losing his first two starts. The Dolphins dropped their third in a row last Sunday, 20-17 on the road to the New York Jets. Miami, though, showed signs of improvement by scoring two late touchdowns and had a chance to tie the game, but Olindo Mare missed a 51-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining. "We've got a lot of guys around here who have won a lot of games," Dolphins cornerback Travis Daniels said. "I don't think we're the worst team in the NFL by a long shot." The Dolphins have scored only eight touchdowns in six games, so on Tuesday, they made a move by signing Marcus Vick from the practice squad. The former Virginia Tech quarterback joins the team as a receiver, and will also provide depth at quarterback while Culpepper is sidelined. Miami signed Vick as an undrafted free agent and switched him to receiver after he was kicked off the team at Virginia Tech in January following his junior year. He caught one touchdown pass, played as a kick returner and took a handful of snaps at quarterback during the exhibition season. Harrington, who is 2-5 in his career against Green Bay, will be facing a Packers defense that is ranked last in the NFL with 275.8 passing yards allowed per game. Green Bay, coming off a bye, improved its pass defense by allowing 209 yards in a 23-20 loss to St. Louis at home in its previous contest on Oct. 8. The Packers are also looking to improve their running game, which is averaging 89.2 yards a contest. Coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday that he believed Ahman Green, who has been sidelined with a sore hamstring the last two games, should be ready to play this week. "I think it benefitted him, in the way we handled him last week too," McCarthy said. "I think more mentally, it let him feel like he knew he was back and he could push the hamstrings. I think it gave him a little more sense of relief mentally going into the bye week." Green has 58 carries for 215 yards and 17 receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown this season. Before the hamstring injury, he was showing signs of returning to his dominant ways when he rushed for over 1,000 yards in each season from 2000-04 before a knee injury sidelined him for 11 games last season. The Packers are hoping that with Green healthy and Noah Herron coming off career highs of 20 carries for 106 yards against the Rams, the running game will take some pressure off quarterback Brett Favre. The Packers rank 27th in the NFL with 446 rushing yards, forcing Favre to throw 203 passes - sixth-most in the league. Favre has completed a career-low 56.7 percent of those attempts, and has thrown seven touchdowns and five interceptions this season. Green Bay's loss to St. Louis ended with Favre fumbling 11 yards short of the end zone in the final minute of the game with the Packers driving toward a tying field goal or winning touchdown. "You have to try to find positives within all these negatives," Favre said. "And I wonder sometimes what I'm doing here. I felt like I've let the team down - that when I step on the field we win, and in those situations we definitely win. And as I walk off the field I go, 'What can I do? What else can I do?"' The Dolphins are 9-2 against Green Bay, including victories in all six games played in Miami. These teams haven't faced each other in Miami since a 28-20 win by the Dolphins on Oct. 29, 2000. Green Bay won 24-10 at Lambeau Field in the last meeting in the series on Nov. 4, 2002. |
