08/17/16QBColin KaepernickArmPROBABLEKaepernick (shoulder) expects to take the field for Friday's preseason game versus the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Kaepernick tended to what head coach Chip Kelly termed "dead arm" for more than a week, but his return to full practices both Monday and Tuesday has seemingly paved the way for his first appearance of the preseason. So far, Kelly has delayed naming the 49ers' starting quarterback due to Kaepernick's lack of game action. Backing up that sentiment, offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said, "It's a competition, and Kap hasn't had a chance to perform yet. So, when that happens and when coach [Kelly] feels like it's time, we'll do that. But right now it's not time." Two exhibitions remain for Kaepernick to make a play for the gig, but Blaine Gabbert has handled the first-team reps to this stage of the preseason.

08/15/16QBThad LewisKneeOUTLewis suffered a torn ACL during Sunday's preseason opener and will now miss the remainder of this season, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Lewis was forced out during the third quarter of Sunday's game, when he was the second signal-caller used in wake of Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) being sidelined. However, now that his season has already come to a close, rookie Jeff Driskel should see more reps behind Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert in practice.

07/31/16DBJaquiski TarttLegNFITartt (undisclosed) was activated from the non-football injury list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Tartt was sidelined after tweaking a muscle, but it is unclear where on his body the tweak occurred. However, it does not appear to be a serious issue, as he has returned after a one week absence. The 24-year-old currently projects to be the teams back up strong safety.

This move was made to make room on the roster for offensive lineman Anthony Davis who was reinstated by the league from retirement Saturday. It remains to be seen when Williams will play again.

08/22/16LBTamba HaliKneePROBABLEWhen asked if Hali (knee) would record any snaps in the preseason, head coach Andy Reid responded, "Only if I feel they are right."

Hali was taken off the PUP list on Monday as he finally is healthy enough to take the field after undergoing offseason knee surgery. There is no reason for the Chiefs to rush their veteran linebacker back into the fold and will likely only give him reps when they are 100% confident in his health.

08/16/16RBJamaal CharlesKneePROBABLEIn his fourth practice since coming off PUP, Charles (knee) did some work in full-team drills Tuesday, BJ Kissel of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Charles' continued progress is encouraging, but the Kansas City Star notes that the Chiefs aren't inclined to push the running back into preseason action. When asked Tuesday if Charles or LB Tamba Hali were candidates to take the field Saturday against the Bears or next week against the Packers, coach Any Reid said, "only if I feel if they're right. But I'm not going to stick them out there if there"s a question on it."
