08/27/16DLQuinton DialKneeQUESTIONABLEThe 49ers have signed Dial to a three-year extension, The Sacramento Bee reports.

Dial - who would have been a free agent after the 2016 season - set career-highs in tackles (59 combined) and sacks (2.5) this past year. He showed enough improvement for the 49ers' front office to extend his contract through the 2019 season. A former fifth-round draft pick in 2013, Dial has outworked higher draft picks from that class - such as Tank Carradine and Corey Lemonier - to earn a starting spot next year.

08/27/16WRBruce EllingtonHamstringQUESTIONABLEEllington (ankle) won't play in Saturday's preseason game at Denver, the 49ers' official site reports.

With an ankle sprain in tow, Ellington will be an observer rather than participant in San Francisco's second exhibition outing. His absence should give the likes of Jerome Simpson and DeAndrew White additional targets to work with Saturday.

08/27/16RBCarlos HydeConcussionPROBABLEHyde should benefit from having an improved offensive line this season.

Hyde showed flashes of brilliance last season, but a shoddy offensive line and a foot injury put a cap on his production. With the return of 2014 starters Daniel Kilgore and Anthony Davis to compliment the steady Joe Staley, the third-year back has the strongest line in front him since being drafted in 2014. The 49ers also used their first-round pick on Stanford guard Joshua Garnett, who is currently trying to earn a spot on the starting line. Hyde will still have to deal with defenses stacking the box against a 49ers team that doesn't have much of an aerial attack, but the improved bulk up front should help combat that issue.

08/15/16QBThad LewisKneeOUTLewis suffered a torn ACL during Sunday's preseason opener and will now miss the remainder of this season, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Lewis was forced out during the third quarter of Sunday's game, when he was the second signal-caller used in wake of Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) being sidelined. However, now that his season has already come to a close, rookie Jeff Driskel should see more reps behind Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert in practice.

07/31/16DBJaquiski TarttLegNFITartt (undisclosed) was activated from the non-football injury list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Tartt was sidelined after tweaking a muscle, but it is unclear where on his body the tweak occurred. However, it does not appear to be a serious issue, as he has returned after a one week absence. The 24-year-old currently projects to be the teams back up strong safety.

This move was made to make room on the roster for offensive lineman Anthony Davis who was reinstated by the league from retirement Saturday. It remains to be seen when Williams will play again.
