New York at Philadelphia

Jets run all over Eagles, 37-14

NFL.com wire reports

PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 1, 2005) -- Even being spectators didn't bring Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens together.

McNabb watched from the press box and Owens looked on from the bench as the New York Jets' backups dominated the Philadelphia Eagles' junior varsity in a 37-14 victory.

Chad Pennington played one series for the Jets, completing all three of his passes and leading the offense into the end zone. Rashad Washington returned an interception 99 yards for a score, and Derrick Blaylock and Little John Flowers each had TD runs.

"If there was a positive, it was an opportunity to see the young guys," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "I'm not happy with their performance out there. It wasn't very good."

Eagles defenders couldn't grab a hold of Derrick Blaylock or any of the Jets' runners.

No matter how tenuous their relationship, it's clear the Eagles need McNabb and Owens on the field. The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback and the All-Pro wideout have been feuding and aren't on speaking terms. But they connected five times for 131 yards, including a 64-yard TD pass on the first play from scrimmage, last week in their lone appearance together this preseason.

Backup quarterback Koy Detmer played poorly and the rest of Philadelphia's reserves didn't have much success.

The NFC champion Eagles open the season in Atlanta on Sept. 12 in a rematch of the conference title game. The Jets open at Kansas City a day earlier.

With most of the starters sitting out, both coaches got extended looks at players fighting for roster spots and jockeying for positions on the depth chart. Herman Edwards had to be more pleased than Reid.

"He's right where he's supposed to be," Jets coach Herman Edwards said of Pennington. "Everybody made a big deal of how he played last week. It wasn't his arm. It was his decision-making."

Pennington, still adjusting to a new offense while trying to get into rhythm after offseason shoulder surgery, led the Jets 65 yards in eight plays on the opening drive.

He completed passes of 15 and 7 yards to Chris Baker, setting up Blaylock's 5-yard scoring run. Last week, Pennington threw two interceptions in the end zone against the Giants.

"I'm still learning a lot in this offense and it doesn't count until Sept. 11, so I'm learning everything I can," Pennington said. "I'm trying to put the physical and mental together. I feel good mentally. I just need to continually work on my feet, my reads and try to put my feet and reads together. I'm working with my body and being aware of everything around me."

Rookie kicker Mike Nugent kicked field goals of 48, 35 and 33 yards, triple his total coming in. The Jets are counting on Nugent after going through heartache when Doug Brien missed field goals from 47 and 43 yards in the final minutes of regulation in an overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the playoffs.

Flowers' 5-yard TD run gave the Jets a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter, and Brooks Bollinger tossed a 35-yard TD pass to Chas Gessner to make it 27-0 at halftime.

Mike McMahon, who replaced Detmer halfway through the second quarter, had an 8-yard TD run on the opening drive of the third quarter. But Washington picked off McMahon's pass at the 1 and ran it back to put the Jets ahead 34-7.

Second-year pro Bruce Perry ran in from the 3 for Philadelphia's other score. Perry, unlikely to make the team despite a solid preseason, ran for 76 yards and caught four passes for 33 yards. But he left with a knee and ankle injury late and his status wasn't immediately known.

Detmer, entering his ninth season with the Eagles, was outplayed by McMahon in the preseason. However, Detmer will remain McNabb's backup mainly because he's the holder for kicker David Akers.

Detmer finished 3 of 8 for 47 yards and one interception. McMahon completed 15 of 27 passes for 144 yards and two interceptions.

"Things started all right and then tapered off," Detmer said. "We did some good things; we did some bad things."
