2014 NFL Draft: Bears get an A for picking Kyle Fuller at No. 14
With the 14th pick in the first round, the Chicago Bears select Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller.
NEW YORK -- With the 14th pick in the first round, the Chicago Bears select Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller.
Darqueze Dennard may have have won the Thorpe Award as the best college cornerback last season but Fuller proved in Virginia Tech's game against Alabama that he was a legit playmaking cover cornerback.
Overlooked by the media for most of the pre-draft proceedings, Fuller quietly moved up teams' boards as May approached. Listed at 6-0, 190, he ran a 4.40 at the combine, and during his senior season displayed the kind of physicality that NFL teams covet. Of course, that physical play comes at a price; he missed the final four games with a hernia injury.
More via NFLDraftScout.com analyst Dane Brugler:
"Fuller played multiple positions over his four-year starting career in Blacksburg, seeing time at linebacker, safety and cornerback, both inside and outside, as well as hybrid positions of the three. An All-ACC performer the past three seasons, Fuller is rangy and light-footed with quick movements, long arms and the aggressive mentality to play man or zone coverage.
"The game appears to come very natural to him, watching the eyes and moves of the wide receiver to react accordingly and break on routes to get his hands on the ball. Fuller is a string bean with limited room to get much stronger, but he plays bigger than he looks with the confidence and instincts to make plays wherever he lines up."
CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco gives the Bears an A for the pick.
I love the Fuller pick. The top corner in my mind and they need corners in a division with two good passers. GRADE: A http://t.co/KPxAyHqyNs— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) May 9, 2014
As for what Fuller will make...
Kyle Fuller should sign a fully GTD 4-year, $9,687,002 deal with a $1,761,273 '14 cap number. His signing bonus should be $5,365,092.— Joel Corry (@corryjoel) May 9, 2014
