49ers acquire CB Eric Wright ... again
A few weeks after the 49ers failed cornerback Eric Wright during his physical after a trade from Tampa Bay, they signed him to a deal.
Only after the Buccaneers traded cornerback Eric Wright to the 49ers last month was it discovered that Wright had been arrested the week before. San Francisco claimed that it had done its due diligence before the trade had been completed, but that statement was countered by the fact that the 49ers failed Wright during his physical a few days later.
The Buccaneers promptly released him, and only a few weeks later, the 49ers announced Thursday that they again had signed Wright to a one-year contract and had placed him immediately on the Non-Football Injury/Illness list.
“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”
Though Wright was suspended four games last season for the use of Adderall, which voided what would have been a guaranteed salary of $7.75 million with Tampa Bay in 2013, he should improve a 49ers secondary that is reeling from the season-ending injury suffered by cornerback Chris Culliver.
Wright’s signing also might make life a little more difficult for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who seemingly is on the roster bubble. If, that is, Wright is healthy enough to beat him out for a job -- which apparently isn’t the case quite yet.
