49ers hire Eric Mangini as senior offensive consultant
The 49ers have hired former Jets and Browns head coach Eric Mangini to be a 'senior offensive consultant.'
After almost two years in television, former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini is getting back into coaching -- or consulting, if you want to be techinical. The San Francisco 49ers have hired Mangini as a "senior offensive consultant."
Mangini had been working as a football analyst with ESPN since August 2011.
It's an interesting move by the 49ers, considering most of Mangini's coaching experience comes on the defensive side of the ball. Mangini was a defensive assistant for the Jets from 1997-99 before moving on to New England, where he was a defensive backs coach for five seasons.
In 2005, Patriots coach Bill Belichick promoted Mangini to defensive coordinator, where he lasted for one season before being hired in 2006 as the Jets' head coach. Mangini lasted three seasons in New York before being fired in 2008.
Mangini then moved on to Cleveland, where he won a total of 10 games in two seasons as the Browns' head coach.
After being fired by the Browns in January 2011, Mangini moved on to television.
Mangini does have some experience as an offensive coach. In 1996, Mangini was an offensive assistant for the Ravens.
The 42-year-old may not help offensive coordinator Greg Roman draw up plays, but he could be an asset when it comes to dissecting opposing defenses, which in turn could potentially help the 49ers' offensive attack.
