49ers place LB Aldon Smith on reserve/non-football injury list
The San Francisco 49ers placed linebacker Aldon Smith on the reserve/non-football injury list on Monday. Smith will be out as he seeks rehab following his Sept. 20 DUI.
After San Francisco's 27-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, 49ers CEO Jed York announced that linebacker Aldon Smith would be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team following Smith's Sept. 20 arrest on DUI charges.
That indefinite leave of absence officially began on Monday when the 49ers placed Smith on the team's reserve/non-football injury list. As previously reported by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Smith will head to a rehab facility for counseling and inpatient rehabilitation.
"I am taking a leave of absence to address my health," Smith said in a statement. "I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans."
General manager Trent Baalke also released a statement, "Aldon Smith is taking a leave of absence to address a personal matter," Baalke said. "The 49ers organization both respects and supports Aldon’s decision and commends him for taking responsibility for his actions. The long-term well-being of our players is paramount and we will stand by Aldon as he works toward addressing this issue. Due to the private nature of the matter, we will have no further comment."
York has already confirmed that Smith will miss the 49ers Week 4 game on Thursday against St. Louis. After that, it's up in the air, Smith is eligible to return to the team at any time. While Smith is on the NFI list, the 49ers can add another player to their 53-man active roster. However, the team hasn't yet announced an additional move.
