49ers QB Alex Smith out for Monday night's game against Chicago
49ers quarterback Alex Smith will not play on Monday night against the Bears.
Jay Cutler, the Bears' starting quarterback, is already out for Monday night against the 49ers. And his San Francisco counterpart, Alex Smith, is set to join him on the sideline, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirms.
Smith, like Cutler, suffered a concussion in Week 10. Smith, unlike Cutler, doesn't have a history with concussions and was listed as questionable for Monday night's showdown. He has not been cleared and will not play against Chicago, as first reported by Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
The 49ers are third in the NFL in passing defense, giving up 196.8 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks. The Bears are 10th, giving up 215 yards per game. Perhaps more telling, though: both defenses give up an incredibly stingy 6.1 yards per pass play, tied for the second-lowest total in the NFL.
According to Sportsbook.ag, the line moved from 49ers -7 to 49ers -5 as a result of the Smith report, with the over/under for total points dropping from 36.5 to 35.
In other words, if you love scoring, this might not be the game for you. But if you like backup quarterbacks throwing into the teeth of destructive defenses, well, you're in luck.
