The San Francisco 49ers have made it clear that getting an extension done with quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a "high priority." Thanks to 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, we now have a timeline for when the team wants to have the extension completed: training camp.

"We're going to work extremely hard, very diligently in trying to get something done prior to training camp," Baalke said Tuesday, via CSNBayArea.com. "That's the objective right now, as it stands."

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh made it clear Monday at the NFL owners meetings that getting an extension done with Kaepernick is a "priority" the team needs to take care of.

"Those things have a process that play out. The priority is Colin Kaepernick is a San Francisco 49er for however long we can have him be a San Francisco 49er," Harbaugh said. "It's definitely a high priority."

The question is how much is it going to cost to keep Kaepernick in San Francisco? CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora wrote in early March that he expects talks to begin at $20 million a year. The two sides have gone through preliminary negotiations, a process that began in February

Whatever Kaepernick's extension ends up paying him, it'll be a lot more than what he's slated to make under the final year of his current contract.

As part of his rookie deal that he signed in 2011, Kaepernick is owed $1.073 million in base pay and bonuses next season. That means, barring an extension, Kaepernick isn't even the highest paid quarterback on the team. That distinction belongs to the newly acquired Blaine Gabbert, who's set to pull in $2.011 million in 2014.
