Aldon Smith won't be charged for making LAX bomb threat
49ers LB Aldon Smith will not face charges stemming from the LAX incident in which he was charged for a false report of a bomb threat.
Back in April, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport and charged for a false report of a bomb threat. According to the LAX police report, Smith was going through terminal screening "where he made a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb."
Predictably, that didn't go over well with authorities and Smith was arrested.
But Tuesday, USAToday.com's Tom Pelissero reported that Smith will not face charges stemming from the incident. Pelissero added that, instead, the 49ers linebacker will face a City Attorney Office Hearing on July 30 to discuss the matter, although the office reserves the right to file charges up to a year after the original April 13 arrest date.
"A City Attorney Office hearing is administered by members of the City Attorney's office in lieu of a criminal filing," Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan wrote in the email to Pelissero. "Involved parties are scheduled to attend and give their account of the incident. The individuals are then admonished about the applicable laws and given suggestions on how to avoid similar incidents in the future."
But Smith's not completely in the clear; he still faces possible jail time after pleading no contest in May to six charges, including assault weapon and DUI charges.
"I'm a good person, and the people who know me know I'm a good person,” Smith said at the time. “Maybe after this is over, you can tell your friends I'm a good person. Anybody who hangs around me can tell that. A lot of these things are being painted in a picture that's not true.”
