The Romo-Manning debate continues, somehow. (US Presswire)

Amani Toomer recently said he thinks Tony Romo is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Toomer created quite the noise with that statement and has been harshly criticized for his comments. But the former Giants wideout isn't backing off his claim.

Toomer appeared on The Michael Kay Show (via ABC by way of PFT) and cited the need to "do my job" as an analyst in standing up for Romo.

"I love Eli, and I respect the hell out of him as a person," Toomer said.  "But I have to do my job, and I have to look at him beyond what the perception is because the perception doesn’t always go hand in hand with the reality."

Toomer claimed he was fully prepped to hop on the Manning bandwagon but a closer examination of the statistics prompted him to declare that Romo is better than Manning.

"I was all set -- Romo’s no good, he’s a fourth-quarter choker -- and then I started doing my job," Toomer said. "I started looking at the numbers. I started looking at the statistics. I started looking at the quarterback rating. And I was shocked. I was shocked at how good Tony Romo’s statistics really were. This guy is really impressive."

What's fascinating about this argument is it was a legit discussion point back in October of 2011 (when Brandon Jacobs said he'd 100 percent take Manning over Romo). I actually argued that you could get away with choosing Romo over Eli and not be killed for it, though I ultimately decided I preferred Manning myself.

In July 2012 though? You've got no argument now. Manning has a pair of Super Bowls. He joined the elite class of quarterbacks during the 2011 season and he's there to stay. Romo has something to prove, particularly with postseason performance, before he joins the elite class of signal callers, no matter what Jason Witten believes.

Super Bowls are the trump card for comparing quarterbacks. And Toomer is technically kind of correct, because if you compare the numbers between Romo and Manning you'll find -- and you'll probably be surprised -- that the two guys are pretty close. The biggest difference is Manning has the postseason success.

The biggest thing to remember about this discussion is that everyone has an opinion on the topic, and that it won't change even if Romo picks up a ring in 2012. If anything, it'll only get more heated.
