Bears sign former Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen to one-year deal
The backup quarterback competition in Chicago just got a little more interesting.
The Chicago Bears are about to find out if Jimmy Clausen can still play football. The 26-year-old quarterback, who hasn't thrown a regular season pass since 2010, tweeted on Thursday that he's signed with Chicago.
Excited to start a new chapter with the @ChicagoBears ! Blessed to have this opportunity and looking forward to getting started!!— Jimmy Clausen (@JimmyClausen) June 5, 2014
The Bears confirmed Clausen's tweet and added that the quarterback has signed a one-year deal.
The signing won't be any threat to starter Jay Cutler, but it could mean that coach Marc Trestman isn't convinced he has a solid No. 2 quarterback on the roster. Besides Cutler, the Bears have three other quarterbacks in Jordan Palmer, Jerrod Johnson and sixth-round pick David Fales.
Clausen started 10 games as a rookie in 2010 after the Panthers made him a second-round draft pick. Carolina finished 2-14 that season, which enabled the Panther to pick No. 1 overall in 2011, a pick that ended up being Cam Newton.
The selection of Newton all but ended Clausen's chances of starting again in Carolina. Clausen played out his rookie contract with the Panthers and spent 2011 and 2012 on the bench. In 2013, Clausen tore the labrum in his right shoulder in the Panther final preseason game and ended up spending the year on injured reserve.
To make room on the roster for Clausen, the Bears waived linebacker Lawrence Wilson.
