Quarterback John Skelton joined the ranks of the unemployed Saturday when he was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals . Skelton came to Cincinnati this offseason after three seasons in Arizona where he started 17 games, often in place of an injured Kevin Kolb.
During training camp and preseason, Skelton struggled with many of the issues that have plagued him throughout his career: Poor decision making and inaccuracy. So instead of the Bengals carrying three quarterbacks, coach Marvin Lewis settled on starter Andy Dalton and backup Josh Johnson .
The Bengals also announced that they had released T Dennis Roland , and waived the 18 others: FB John Conner , LS Bryce Davis , S Tony Dye , T Reid Fragel , WR Cobi Hamilton , RB Daniel Herron, C T.J. Johnson , CB Chris Lewis-Harris , CB Onterio McCalebb , DE Dontay Moch , CB Shaun Prater , WR Taveon Rogers , WR Roy Roundtree , LB J.K. Schaffer , DT Terrence Stephens , G John Sullen and LB Bruce Taylor .
Skelton, a former fifth-round pick out of Fordham, has thrown for 3,707 yards, 15 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in his three-year career. At 25 years old and with all the physical tools teams look for in an NFL quarterback, he's unlikely to remain out of work long.
