Bills sign general manager Doug Whaley to 4-year extension

Under the cover of Wild Card Weekend, the Buffalo Bills snuck an extension in for their general manager Doug Whaley.

Whaley, GM since May of 2013 when Buddy Nix stepped down from the position, now has his deal closely aligned with Rex Ryan's contract, pairing the two together moving forward.

"We are pleased to announce a multi-year contract extension with our General Manager Doug Whaley," said Bills owner Terry Pegula. "Doug has demonstrated an excellent eye for talent and has been an asset to the organization on many levels. I look forward to working closely with Doug and Coach Ryan for many years to come."

Whaley's tenure has had its ups and downs.

The Bills drafted EJ Manuel in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft -- instead of putting the selection (questionable at the time) on Nix, Whaley took ownership of the decision to draft the Florida State quarterback. It has not worked out ... well.

Whaley is the one who helped bring Rex into the fold in Buffalo. The Bills took a major step back defensively in 2015, although they did record the first back-to-back 8-win seasons in franchise history for the first time since 1999-20000.

Additionally, Whaley deserves credit for securing Sammy Watkins (it did cost them a first-round pick and they could've just waited for Odell Beckham, Jr., but whatever) in the draft, as well as landing Ronald Darby and Karlos Williams -- two impact rookies -- in 2015. The Bills didn't have a first-round pick as a result of the Watkins trade.

Bottom line is Buffalo needs to make the playoffs. They haven't been since 1999 and it's unlikely Pegula will be hyper patient if Buffalo's team takes another step back in 2016, even if he did spend the weekend doling out extensions to his front office.
