Brandon Weeden named Browns starting QB
In what might be the least publicized QB competition in the modern era, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski has named Brandon Weeden the starting quarterback.
Apparently, backup Jason Campbell was also in the mix, even if other Browns' players didn't believe that was a legitimate possibility.
“Brandon's taking all the first-team reps, so take it for what that is,” left tackle Joe Thomas said last week. “I don't know. I'm not evaluating the quarterbacks. I think Jason [Campell]'s had a great camp, so I wouldn't necessarily say that they're not both playing well because they both are. So I don't know how you evaluate which quarterback is going to be the starter or not. But, I mean, I've got eyes just like everybody else does, and Brandon's taken all the first reps.”
Also helping Weeden's cause: He's been lights-out in two preseason games.
Against the Rams, Weeden played 23 snaps, completed 10 of 13 passes for 112 yards, including a touchdown. He followed up that effort by going 8 of 12 for 117 yards and two touchdowns (both to tight end Jordan Cameron) against the Lions. All told, the 29-year-old quarterback is completing 72 percent of his passes and has yet to throw an interception.
Norv Turner may have had his issues as an NFL head coach, but the man knows how to coordinate an offense and develop young(isn) quarterbacks.
"This offense makes sense to me," Weeden told USAToday.com earlier this month. "The digit system makes sense. You don't have to change the entire play call to change one route."
Next stop: 9-7!
